OPHELIA IS ALIVE
This collection of images is predicated on the idea that Hamlet's prospective wife, Ophelia, is still alive today, although in Shakespeare's play, 'Hamlet", she drowns in a creek while picking wildflowers. Ophelia was one of the playwright's most complex characters. She was oppressed by men, mercurial in temperment, carried a sense of innocence and mystery, and at times presented herself with an earthy, erotic air which both enticed and disturbed those around her.
I've let my imagination take hold of the idea that, rather than drowning, she escaped this fate and went on with life. The photos in this series depict various ways that she may have revealed herself during the past couple of centuries.
This group of photos is part of a piece slated to be published in France in 2025 in a publication called, 'PRIVATE: An International Review of Photography'
